The public works plays an important role in the everyday life of the inhabitants of the municipality by:
supplying households with clean, healthy water
working to make the traffic flow as smoothly and safely as possible administering the children’s school
premises and the elderly people’s nursing homes and
keeping the municipality clean and blooming.
The environmental health unit checks that legislation on the environment, food, tobacco and animal protection is followed. Part of the assignment is to deal with all the cases that come in from the outside and to give advice on various environmental matters. About 1,000 such cases are dealt with annually. There are more than 1,100 activities in the municipality that are regularly visited for counselling and control.
It is also necessary to keep up to date on the environmental health situation in the municipality and prepare proposals and measures to prevent ill-health and environmental damage in the long term.
The town planning units works with general planning, urban plans, housing construction programmes, exploitation budget and strategic land issues and also building operations, planning permission inquiries, local development planning and geographical information.
