The Lerum Coat of Arms

Lerums vapenSwedish seals and the coat of arms of administrative districts are an invaluable aspect of our cultural heritage, rooted in the Middle Ages. The seals and coat of arms depict earthbound themes describing local trade and commerce, flora and fauna.

The borders of Lerum municipality today are not very different from those of the ancient administrative district of Wättle. The Wättle coat of arms, from 1563, includes an ox. This explains the presence of an ox-head in the Lerum coat of arms, a heraldic reference.

Long ago the oak was the primary tree in our region. The three gilded oak leaves in the red part of the shield stand for Lerum, Stora Lundby and Skallsjö, three smaller municipalities that have merged to form greater Lerum.

The oxhead and the oak leaves represent strength and endurance.

In 1982 the Lerum coat of arms was approved by the heraldry division of the Swedish National Archive, where it was described as follows: In the gold secition, a full-face black ox-head with a red tounge, and in the upper third three golden oak leaves.

Please note that the Lerum coat of arms is not allowed in commercial use without approval from the Lerum municipality.
